This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like standard physical horror, but within Together resides a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for a decade. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a particular energy to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their country house, a storm hits, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in moments of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters confront the kind of problems that come with most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
