The Details Known Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting

At least 16 lives lost their lives and over 40 were wounded when attackers shot at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have announced the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were taken to medical facilities.

The victims are yet to be publicly named, but police believe their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the victims who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She described the moments before the shooting, stating they were standing when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with several in critical condition. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
