SNAP Payments Set to Expire for Over 40 Million Throughout Prolonged Federal Shutdown

The United States Department of Agriculture announced this past weekend that nutrition assistance payments through a critical national social assistance programs will not be distributed in November amid the persistent government funding lapse.

Closure Continues For Nearly Four Weeks

The government shutdown lasted its 25th day as officials revealed the news, in response to appeals by more than two hundred House Democrats urging the department to utilize reserve accounts to cover next month's benefits.

“The reality is, funds are depleted,” officials announced. “Currently, no payments will be distributed” on 1 November.

National Consequences

Over 40 million Americans depend on the regular assistance, as reported by federal data. Various areas, such as one southwestern state, dependence on this assistance reaches a significant portion of citizens.

Internal communications seen by a major news agency showed that federal authorities decided against using reserve funds for November food benefits.

Partisan Impasse

Congressional leaders remain deadlocked regarding how to fund and reopen government operations.

A statement from the director at a prominent policy organization suggested that the White House could have acted to take earlier action to avoid interruption in payments.

“It could have, and should have acted before now to be prepared to use these funds,” the comments added. “Rather, it may choose not to use them in an effort to gain political advantage” while GOP lawmakers attempt to push upper chamber Democrats to approve a funding package that would reopen the federal government.

States Prepare

Executives in two affected states activated emergency protocols recently to make money available to combat potential hunger expecting food benefits expiring next month.
