Manchester United Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.

A Major Acquisition for the WSL Side

Schüller, who has six months remaining on her deal, is known as a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee coup for the WSL team.

Her exit from Munich has been anticipated after she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the club's supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top forwards. According to reports, the formalities for the move are now finalised.

Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line

The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a major uplift to United’s forward line. She has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.

  • Over seven straight seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Steam at Old Trafford

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club appear to be building momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought further activity:

  1. The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official stated: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
