Iranian forces say they have struck a US naval base in Manama, as Iran launched strikes across the region in retaliation for a large-scale and ongoing attack against it by the US and Israel.

Huge plumes of black smoke were seen rising from an area near the main base of the American Fifth Fleet in Manama, Bahrain. The extent of any destruction is uncertain and the US has not commented.

Missile Defenses Activated

In other parts of the Middle East, the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait - which all house American military installations - said they have shot down missiles in their territorial skies.

In the Qatari capital, the Qatari Ministry of Defence said it had successfully engaged several missiles seemingly aimed at the Al Udeid Air Base, the biggest US military installation in the region.

Operation "Truthful Promise 4"

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard said in a statement it was targeting American facilities and interests as part of military campaign "Truthful Promise 4", in response for the offensive on the Islamic Republic carried out by the US and Israel on Saturday morning.

That initial attack - executed at around 06:15 GMT - has so far struck sites associated with the Tehran's leadership, with US President Donald Trump urging the Iranian people to revolt against the leadership.

Wider Impacts

In the State of Israel, air raid sirens sounded across the country after the Israeli military reported it had detected an incoming Iranian missile barrage.

The Ministry of Defence of the United Arab Emirates announced that the nation has been targeted by a "a blatant attack involving Iranian ballistic missiles".

"UAE air defence systems dealt with the missiles with high efficiency and shot down a number of missiles," it added.

It said wreckage landed in a residential area in the capital, resulting in some structural damage and killing a civilian.

The United States Air Force operates from the Al Dhafra base, to the south of the Emirati capital, along with the Emirati Air Force.
